Serial verb constructions and the syntax-prosody interface

چکیده
Abstract Rolle (2020) identifies an apparent morphophonological conspiracy in serial verb constructions (SVCs) Degema. He argues that it constitutes evidence for a partly-unified postsyntactic module, which morphology and prosody are built parallel (by ‘Optimality-Theoretic Distributed Morphology’). We argue the pattern Degema SVCs instead results from simultaneous interaction of two independently-attested syntax-prosody phenomena: (1) pressure adjacent verbs SVC to form single prosodic unit, (2) suppression redundant agreement within word (a.k.a. ‘Kinyalolo’s Generalization’). Thus can be localized interface, there is no need adopt unified morphology-prosody module like Rolle’s. offer some further conceptual critiques his model.

Serial Verb Constructions in English and Chinese
Traditionally, the term serial verb construction refers to a sequence of verbs or verb phrases in a sentence in which there is no intervening conjunction. The English expression go eat, for example, might be considered as a kind of serial verb construction since there is no infinitive or other morphosyntactic marker present to indicate a coordinating or subordinating relationship between the tw...
متن کاملConstructional Integration, Grammaticization, and Serial Verb Constructions
An important but under-appreciated aspect of grammar is the extent of the integration a grammatical construction specifies among its constitutive elements. Besides its vital role in synchronic grammar, this essential aspect of constructional meaning is a pivotal factor in grammaticization. These points will be illustrated through a variety of construction types drawn from a number of diverse la...
متن کاملSecond Position and the Prosody-syntax Interface
Bögel et al. (2009) outlined a new architecture for modeling the interaction between prosody and syntax: we proposed an arrangement of interacting components in which prosodic information is developed in a module that operates independently of the syntax while still allowing for syntactic rules and preferences to be conditioned on prosodic boundaries and other features. This architecture allows...
متن کاملEnglish and Mandarin Serial or Non-serial Verb Constructions
This paper addresses serial verb constructions (SVCs) in English and Mandarin. Although Mandarin and English is different in the total number of SVC types, three so-called SVC types are found to be common across English and Mandarin: purposive SVCs (e.g. go eat); causative SVCs (e.g. I made him laugh); perceptive SVCs (e.g. I saw him laugh). This paper has demonstrated typical SVCs have unique ...
متن کاملArgument Composition in Korean Serial Verb Constructions ∗
The so-called serial verb construction (SVC) is a complex predicate structure consisting of two or more verbal heads but denotes one single event. This paper discusses the grammatical properties of Korean SVCs and provides a lexicalist, construction-based analysis couched in the typed-feature structure grammar, HPSG. In particular, we identify four different types of the SVCs in Korean, each of...
